2018 NYS Summer Volleyball Clinic – Sponsored by Hawa Smoothies

New York Strangers Sports Organization is running a summer long volleyball clinic geared towards highschool and college aged players looking to improve their technical skills. To run our sessions, we’ve invited experienced coaches with over 30 years of collective experience coaching at the DI, DII, DIII, and club levels.

Clinic Details:

Location: PS2 Meyer London School (122 Henry St, New York, NY 10002)

Time:  9 am to 1 pm

Cost: $75 per clinic participant

About the Coaches:

The following coaches are involved with our clinic.

Jeffrey Lipton
Coach Lipton is an experienced Teacher/Clinician with extensive experience in the sport of volleyball, specializing in practice development, setter and middle hitter training, building offensive systems, and serve receive.  His experience includes the following:
  • 17 years coaching the LIVBC Boys Juniors Club (ranked as high as #1 in the nation).
  • Div III collegiate volleyball at the US Merchant Marine Academy, and Steven’s Institute of Technology one of the top Div 3 programs in the country.
  • Women’s Div I, II, III collegiate volleyball at Hunter College, Adelphi Univeristy, and Columbia University.

Mark Ledwich

Coach Ledwich is the head coach for the St. Joseph’s College Men’s Volleyball Program. He is also the club director and coach of Viper Sports NYC, a boys and girls club program based in Brooklyn that competes in the Garden Empire Volleyball Association. Mark takes pride in focusing on the small details while teaching the larger picture of the game. He wants to make each athlete a contender at whatever level they hope to attain. Using various training techniques and video feedback, Mark won’t stop until you get it right!

James Gross

Coach Gross, grew up in the northern suburbs of Chicago and played club volleyball for Adversity VBC and in the USA High Performance program. In college, he played club volleyball at Indiana University and returned to Adversity VBC to coach both boys and girls teams and development camps.

 

FAQ’s:

How much will the clinic cost?

As  a non-profit, we aim to make volleyball available to local youth. Through Hawa’s contribution, we’re able to lower the cost of the clinic to $75 per player as part of our pilot program. We hope to run more clinics at affordable price points if there is demand for this pilot clinic.

Are the spots limited?

Yes, due to gym size constraints, we’re limiting registration to 25 players per clinic.

Who is the clinic for?

Highschool and college aged players.

What skill level is the clinic?

Intermediate to advanced. Players need to have at least some experience playing highschool, travel club and or college club volleyball. Beginners should sign up for our introductory clinics which will be annouced at a later date.

What are the dates and times for the clinic?

We are running two separate clinics for boys and girls. The sessions will be held on Saturdays throughout the summer from 9am to 1pm.

Session I Coach:

Micah Acoba is a former Division I volleyball coach.  As the head coach at St. Francis College in Brooklyn, he guided the program to its most successful season in nine years and its best conference record in 16 years.

Acoba’s volleyball coaching career also includes head coach of the men’s club teams at Tufts University and Cornell University, assistant coach for the Seward Park Campus varsity boys’ team, coach for the NYC Starlings Volleyball Club, assistant coach of the varsity men’s teams at Hunter College and Baruch College, and head coach of the varsity women’s team at John Jay College.  In NYC Chinatown, he was the head coach of the United East Athletics Association women’s club volleyball team and the men’s basketball team.

Acoba played setter and outside hitter for the Division I varsity men’s volleyball team at Harvard.

Coach Micah Acoba

Session II Coach:

Winkie Hui grew up playing volleyball in Hong Kong and represented the Hong Kong Youth Volleyball Team in 2008 as a Middle Blocker.  She completed the All China Secondary School Students Games and All China Secondary School Students Volleyball Tournament.  She moved to New York in 2011 and recently graduated from LIU Post in Health and Physical Education major, minor in Japanese.  After she came to New York, she participated 5 times in the North American Chinese Invitational Volleyball Tournament.

Winkie has 5 years of experience of coaching 12’s and under with NYC Juniors Volleyball Club and helped lead 4 teams to Junior Girls’ Volleyball Nationals.  Aside from club volleyball, she also has 3 years of experience of coaching middle school and high school volleyball.
